On the turbulent surface of Thalassa, high-speed jet skis and aquatic drones are central to both exploration and conflict. This combination of speed, stealth, and remote tech mirrors the militarized exploitation of the ocean—a sharp contrast to the more integrated, simple technologies used by Lani and her team. Where Lani uses their tech to listen and connect, Cutten uses machines to dominate and extract.
Jet skis
Jet skis in the novel are advanced, militarized craft equipped with retractable hydrofoils and dive planes, allowing them to skim across the ocean at speeds up to 80 mph and dive briefly beneath the surface for stealth or attack. Piloted by Cutten mercenaries, these vehicles are agile and deadly—used for chasing Nesoi, patrolling reef zones, and conducting raids.
Manta-ray Drones
Supporting jet skis, manta-ray drones, are small, autonomous vehicles that can scout, track, or attack underwater targets. These drones are sleek, yellow, and agile, capable of entering reef systems or underwater caves. Their design blends surveillance and intimidation, as they assist jet ski riders in coordinated attacks or ambushes.
